Telling the Truth or TMI?

By Amy · August 16, 2010 · Filed in Social Media, Technology

When is telling the truth just too much information? Over the weekend my husband and I returned from a really nice 10-day vacation. Although it’s been planned for over a year AND we had a laptop with us, I never mentioned it on Facebook (or Twitter, or in a blog post, etc.) It’s one thing that I always caution those in my seminars about. Be careful what you say – when leaving town it always seems to me like I am announcing, “Come burgle me!” So I just did very minimal posting during my vacation – (hello? vacation.)

There are a lot of things we might consider NOT talking about on Facebook or social media outlets. Good judgment should always be used and do like I tell my children: act as if Grandma were reading your posts. I’ll be writing more about that soon. That’s not to say you shouldn’t have SOME personal touch; remember that social media is about the know-like-and trust factor. Letting people get to know you is a key part of it. And that would include vacations, hobbies, pets and kids. But, I am much happier telling you when I return that I’ve been gone, instead of announcing it to my Friends and potentially their Friends before I leave or while I am gone.  We’ve all heard those stories about people who announced they were leaving on Facebook and actually WERE burgled.

BreckenridgeNow, you are probably thinking, “Oh boy! Amy is going to post some great pictures or videos from her vacation.” And you would be right to hope that. Unfortunately, I don’t take many pictures but I will have some in an album in Facebook and will post some short videos I took (6-10 seconds long!) at various points. It’s hard to capture the beauty of the mountains, so I only took a few. I’ll leave you with one of the last parting shots from Breckenridge. We go every other summer and enjoy it tremendously. Especially this year when it was about 40 degrees cooler than back at home.

What do you think about posting when you are leaving for vacations? I see everyone doing it, but it still bothers me. Leave me your comments!

Amy! I was thinking to myself last week “Where is Amy?” because you posted so little on FB! Glad you are back and hope to hear about your trip on Wednesday! :)

I agree 100%. I read people posting way TOO much personal information, and it does not seem like a smart thing to do.

Oh I so agree! I’m incredibly open and transparent on Twitter and Facebook so when it’s time for a vacation I don’t feel like making a disappearing act is a great idea… that’s almost a flag that I’m not home too! Scheduling blogs and tweets is not particularly authentic but it does serve a good business purpose. And I think it’s also a good way to create an impression “somebody’s still at home” AND maintain business presence even while you’re not working. Great and important post Amy. I certainly don’t want to announce “come burgle” me and on my holiday this summer I had to delete many holiday tweets before posting as I caught myself doing exactly that… tweet, tweet, I’m on holidays and nobody is home. Not a great idea.

I agree. Never tell people when you are traveling or gone from the home. As of late I have been slowly redoing my FB with less personal info yet staying personable. It is important to be a real person and yet be careful as our info is available to the world. Thank you for the info and hope you found rest during your break in Breckenridge (I have summer vacationed there as well. Nice spot. – RJ

Let me begin by saying… welcome home and so glad you enjoyed your Vacay! Nothing like a little R&R to recharge the batteries and keep us moving forward.

I totally agree. No one needs to know our whereabouts every moment of the day, and especially not on FB. Personal info is just that personal. Social networking is just that. We would never consider telling people at a business mixer about the minutia of our daily existence. Why should FB be any different?

This is very pertinent info for anyone, especially if your business is closed during vacation. I always worry about my brides and grooms that have their announcement in the paper the day after the wedding, saying they are gone on the honeymoon. Think of all the new gifts sitting at home waiting for someone to grab. Much better to let folks know after the fact!

Amy,

I agree with you 100% I recently took some time off and made the decision not to advertise it on my SM pages. In fact, only family and friends knew I was gone.

I have come across TMI being broadcast by some who feel the need the either vent about a situation (or person). My question to this is why? Why do I need to know that? Why does anyone need to know?

It seems to me that those who give out TMI haven’t stopped to consider the repercussions to themselves!

Thank you all for the comment love! I especially like the idea of pre-posting to keep the ideas flowing. That’s an idea to implement next time I go on vacation.
