It’s “pick your word” time. It seems like every other blog post or Facebook post is asking the question: what is your one word for 2012? Honestly, I’m reluctant to play along. Two years ago everyone was doing vision boards. I resisted as long as I could but eventually gave in to the pressure. I found a jillion old magazines at the used book store (which they were happy to give me) and spent a few fun hours cutting and pasting. However, it wasn’t long before my little project started collecting dust. Occasionally it would draw my eye and I’d longingly look at the picture of the spa vacation or remodeled kitchen. But for the most part, this was not anything I felt kinship to. Does that mean I’m not a visionary, or not a visual person, or just someone not driven to achieve the goals pasted on a poster board?
In 2012 I’m buckling to the peer pressure once again by choosing “my one word.” The choices have been tumbling around in my head for days. What feels right: Excellence, Power, Focus, Happy, Growth, Fun, Family, Time Management – can I even choose two words? What are the rules anyway…? What if I choose the wrong word? What happens if I don’t like my word in a couple of months? What do I do to make sure that word has significant meaning in my life? Oh…all the what if’s!
Happily, I’ve chosen my one word. It suits both my business and family life. What more can a girl ask for? It will look good made up in a Pinterest type of sign, too. (except mine will be one you can read and understand. What is this sign saying anyway?)
If you are playing along this year, leave me some New Year’s love. What is your One Word? I’ll share mine in the next post…!

Monetize is my word for 2012
You asked great questions Amy. The truth is you make the rules. (It’s your word; your life!)
Can you pick more than one? Absolutely. Last year I picked five and had a bracelet made.

This year I’m picking a phrase instead of a word — more wiggle room.
What happens if you choose the wrong word? Not possible. It’s the word that speaks to you now.
What happens if you don’t like the word in a couple of months? Change it. Nothing is permanent. If it’s lost its magic in your heart, choose one that does sparkle.
How do you make sure it has meaning in your life? It should feel juicy and awaken something in you. It should cause you to move toward your goals not away.
Wishing you sparkling 2012!
Warmest, Paula
Megan – I am happy that you are putting Monetize out there! Good luck with that. That would remind me also to not let people pick my brain for free. Keep me posted on your success!
Paula – aren’t you clever with the bracelet idea! That is real commitment. Everyone should look at your link and see that cute bracelet!
Love these two of yours: Live Your Sparkle and All in, EXCITED and ALIVE.
Thanks for your comments and encouragement.

My word for 2012: Fearless!
Great post, Amy!
I don’t have a word yet but you’ve inspired me to think of one that really resonates with me!
Can’t wait to find out what your word is!!!
Oh – and that Pinterest sign says “Anthropoligie” I think….?
JESSICA! Love it! And you certainly are…fearless. Thanks for sharing.
KELLY – thanks for solving that mystery of the sign for me. Couldn’t tell the ‘R’ or ‘I’. Duh. Choose words that “sparkle” with you, as Paula said!
Amy, I didn’t realize everyone was choosing a word for 2012, but love the idea. I see what you mean about the rules. I tend to be one that likes to follow the rules…unless I don’t like them. ;0) At least if I know what they are, I can choose whether to follow them or not. After taking a few minutes to soak in your article, the word PEACE came to me. That is my word…
Paula, you gave me my word for the year – thank you: SPARKLE! Love it.
Amy, great article. I agree with other folks, no rules…but as much as we want to believe it, we do like guidelines right?
Looking forward to hearing your word in next week’s post.
Thanks for putting this ‘out there’…love the discussion! xoxo
Hi Amy, your resistance and inner commentary about choosing one word really cracked me up – not cuz I was laughing at you but with you. I’ve so been there. It’s the rebel in me for sure. I resist boxing myself in.
One word… just one? (This thought immediately followed by all the other Q’s you mentioned and then some LOL).
And you’re right – it is a hot topic. Everyone is asking what MY word is for the year.
After reading everyone’s comments I briefly considered changing my word to SPARKLE – what a fun word! And it certainly fits my mission to help women ignore proof their message and invisible proof their biz.
But, I have a greater calling this year. And so, the word I chose – that still resonates with the work I do is … RISE.
From taking strategies up a notch (or ten) to expanding what women believe is possible for them – “RISE” is a great fit
xo
KRISTI – after reading your latest blog post, I think PEACE is definitely the right word for you. Sending you some right now. xo
BRENDA – isn’t Sparkle fun?! Can’t wait to hear how you use that this year. I should have a follow up post in a few months and find out…(making mental note to self.)
Gina – glad you saw the “real” me in those questions! Rebel, maybe. Rock the boat, always! I figure my job is to question the rules… But, girl! RISE is so appropriate for you. Awesome word!
Wow – this really got me thinking! Last year my word was PASSION. And I felt it with every bone in my body. But I hadn’t thought about my word for 2012!
After reading the posts above, including SPARKLE (love that), and giving it some thought, for now I’ve decided on SIZZLE ! I’m on FIRE and love what I’m doing – and I want to support others to do the same! That burning desire in many aspects of my life makes sizzle the word for me!
Can’t wait to hear yours!
Just had to share – my word is COMMITTED! Yes, i’m on fire, but committed to business, family, life is really what’s it’s all about for me this year! Thanks Amy – never thought this would have made me think so much!
CATHY – Thanks for coming back and letting me know. Passion was a great word, but Committed is, too! Maybe you can be passionately committed!
I love the idea of picking a word for the year, but I’ve had all the same questions and concerns as you’ve brought attention to here.
I haven’t picked my word exactly, but it’s among this bunch: bravery, courage, pursuit, joy.
Amy: I know what you mean about the vision board thing. I was never feelin’ that either and never made the time to do one. Glad to see I wasn’t the only one!
I do however always pick a theme for the year and this year is no exception. My word is BALANCE! I don’t want MORE of any one thing in my life. I want to do less and get better at each of my roles: Wife, Daughter, Sister, Friend, Volunteer, Entepreneur. Which means I need adjust how I budget my precious time and energy. I’m very excited about my theme!
One of ways I keep it top of mind is to incorporate it into my various passwords. That way as I’m going throughout my day and having to type in my password I’m constantly being reminded about my theme. This has worked really well for me!
I can’t wait to see what your word is!
Sydni – I love your word! And I love that you realized you needed to do less. I’m a firm believer in that. The password idea is a good one, too. Thanks for sharing what you will be doing this year.
One word? Only one word? Seriously? Hmmm … I’m not sure what that would be. Profit? Relationships? Excellence? Visibility? Value? Love? Complete? Balance? Respect? Commitment? Hard to choose just one!
