A not so ugly secret
As a work at home Mom for the last 13 years, one thing has made a difference for how I feel about myself. I always -without exception- dress down to my shoes (as the Flylady calls it.) It may be lunchtime before I get my exercising and shower in, but if you saw me, I’d have on decent clothes, shoes, jewelry, makeup, and my hair done. My mom would be proud that I’m likely to have on lipstick, too.
Okay – it’s not rocket science, but after 3 decades in a corporate world I know that I perform better when I am “ready.” If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you’ll do better work. I’m ready to dash out of the door to the store, or to a client’s office, and don’t have to delay a trip or feel embarrassed if I run into someone. I do it even if no one else is around and I know I’m not going anywhere.
What do YOU do when no one is looking?

I like to get dressed to get in the groove of my day–however, sometimes that doesn’t haven’t until after I have checked my email and eaten my breakfast!
I rarely will put on shoes though – -if I am going to go outside or go to the store, I will put them on, but I almost never wear shoes inside my house.
LOVE the blog Amy!
I agree! Although I don’t work from home, I do live alone now. On weekends, getting dressed “from head to toe”, as Amy calls it, definitely has an impact on how I feel about myself. I feel like I’m at my best and ready to greet the world!
I have recently retired and am having a real transition problem. I always feel like I need a TO DO list so I can feel as if I’ve accomplised something each day (even if it’s ironing). I think I need a list for fun things rather than work things!

I worked at home/ran my own business for 25+ years and did not always dress top to bottom every day.
I loved that I could work in my pjs if I wanted though I rarely worked in them. I do my hair every day, I do my face, but don’t always do makeup. I looked great when I went out but at home bending and lifting and hammering and sawing and sewing and hot-glueing — no way was I going to wear my “good” clothes.
Today I love retirement and am just now getting over feeling indulgent when I spend time during the day reading a book, cross stitching or watching a movie.
